Trailer Tuesday: Dead to You by Lisa McMann

You likely know Lisa McMann from the Wake Trilogy or the supremely creepy Cryer's Cross. Dead To You is her newest, and first non-supernatural, book.

If you've read it, what did you think of the ending? I found it SO FRUSTRATING!

Featured Teen Book Review of the Week: The Girl is Murder

The Girl is Murder by Kathryn Miller Haines

4 stars.

Describe the book: Iris' dad was injured at Pearl Harbor and her mother committed suicide just days before he came home. Now having a home in the Lower East Side and going to public school is her life. When a boy from her school disapears, and her father is put on the case, she decides she has to help, but not with her father's permission.

What did you think: This book was amazing! I really love watching crime shows and the way the author incorporated some of a detective's work into the book was cool. Iris and I are kind of alike because I would probably try to solve the case like her. My favorite part was when Iris, Suze, and the Rainbows went to Savoy.

Who would you recommend it to: Mystery and Detective Lovers

Movies About Books...revisited

Around a year ago I wrote a post about how I feel about movies that have been turned into books. In that post I mentioned two fairly long books, Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series.
These are long books that are jam packed full of world building detail and their plots can be viewed as complex. However, at least they unfold in a linear fashion.

The same can not be said for the next book to movie translation I am anticipating.  Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell is a book noted for how challenging it is to read and yet they are turning it into a movie!

I am very curious to see how they pull this off. The Wachowski brothers are the directors, which could be a very good thing or a very bad thing. We shall see come October 2012.

Weekend Book Give-Away: Struck

How is your summer going?  Anything exciting going on?  If you are getting the mid-summer duldrums, Struck by Jennifer Bosworth (featured as this week's Tuesday Trailer) could be the book to kick you right out of it.

Mia Price is a lightning addict. She’s survived countless strikes, but her craving to connect to the energy in storms endangers her life and the lives of those around her.  Los Angeles, where lightning rarely strikes, is one of the few places Mia feels safe from her addiction. But when an earthquake devastates the city, her haven is transformed into a minefield of chaos and danger. The beaches become massive tent cities. Downtown is a crumbling wasteland, where a traveling party moves to a different empty building each night, the revelers drawn to the destruction by a force they cannot deny. Two warring cults rise to power, and both see Mia as the key to their opposing doomsday prophecies. They believe she has a connection to the freak electrical storm that caused the quake, and to the far more devastating storm that is yet to come.

Lightning addict?!  A little too thrilling a hobby for me.  I'm assuming none of you do anything that crazy either.  But if you want to win this book, tell me about what sorts of thrills you do seek out for excitement.  No thrill too small!

Winner will be selected with Random Number Generator on Tuesday July 31, 2012. Be sure to leave a name with your entry, and check back to see if you won. To win you must be a teen (6th-12th grade, or 12-18) who uses a Sno-Isle Library.

Trailer Tuesday: Struck by Jennifer Bosworth

So this looks equal parts awesome, cheesy, and spoilery. But, since I haven't read it yet, that's just a guess. Have you? Is it any of those three things? Let me know in the comments.

Lots of people waiting for this one.  For a chance to win it...check back Friday!

Featured Teen Book Review of the Week: Curveball, the Year I Lost My Grip

Curveball, the Year I Lost My Grip by Jordan Sonnenblick

4 stars.

Describe the book: Peter LOVES baseball. He's been playing it for what seems like forever, and can't possibly imagine a future without it. But, sadly, the doctor says he will have to after a pitching accident over the summer. And if that wasn't enough to think about, Pete believes that his father may be losing his mind, AND that he's crushing on this girl, Angie.

What did you think: I first had my doubts about this book. I mean, I'm someone who never really got sports, and reading a book that seems to be based off of it? Please! But, I thought I'd give it a try. And I was SO wrong. This book is SO much more than pitching and hitting a homerun. My favorite part was when Pete finally knew what was 'so off' about his grandpa.

Who would you recommend it to: people who love sports and photography

Weekend Book Give-Away: The Stalker Chronicles

Labels are the worst, right?  Nobody likes getting them, unless maybe you pick one out for yourself.  But when other people stick you with one, getting rid of them can be so hard!  This week's book The Stalker Chronicles by Carley E. Moore features a girl trying to shake a label, she may or may not have earned:

Sophomore Cammie Bliss has long been labeled a stalker by her peers, but when a cute new boy named Toby arrives at her small town high school, Cammie has a chance to be "normal." Trouble is, she can't really help herself and she's up to her old tricks of "intense observation and following" pretty quick. Making things worse, her younger brother is dating one of the most popular girls in the school, her parents have separated, and her dad has begun to watch their house most nights. Cammie has simply got to figure out why she behaves the way she does, and end it once and for all.

Have you (or a friend) ever done anything embarrassing that got you a label that was hard to shake?  If you are willing to admit to it here, you will get a chance to win this week's book!

Winner will be selected with Random Number Generator on Tuesday July 3, 2012. Be sure to leave a name with your entry, and check back to see if you won. To win you must be a teen (6th-12th grade, or 12-18) who uses a Sno-Isle Library.

Trailer Tuesday: Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

While I'm not one to rely too much on reviews, Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo has certainly received some good ones. I admit that the idea of a fantasy novel set in something approximating Russia could also be refreshing. And, ever since I read The Girl of Fire and Thorns and The False Prince early this year, I've been jonesing for excellent fantasy. Here's hoping. Have you red it?

Featured Teen Book Review of the Week: The Pledge

The Pledge by Kimberly Derting

4 stars.

Describe the book: Charlie lives in a world where the different classes speak both their own language and common language. You are not to understand any language that is not yours. Charlie can understand all languages. This ability will get get her killed if she isn't careful. Which is hard to do after she meets a boy that speaks an unknown language.

What did you think: This book was so good. I read it all in one sitting. It was interesting from the beginning. It was filled twists and turns and the end was filled with heart stopping interactions. This book was somewhat confusing because none of the languages are real, but once you can straighten out which class speaks what language it is a great book.

Who would you recommend it to: For fans of fiction languages and secret abilities

Featured Teen Book Review of the Week: Future Imperfect

Future Imperfect, by K. Ryer Breese

4 stars.

Describe the book: Whenever Ade Patience gets a concussion, he sees the future, and whenever he sees the future, he gets high. The bigger the concussion, the farther he sees, and the bigger the high. When he meets the girl of his dreams, Ade decides to give it all up. Unfortunately, an accidental concussion shows him killing someone in the near future.

What did you think: The premise and storytelling were awesome. I need to get the second book.

Who would you recommend it to: Clairvoyants.

Mermaids? Really?

First it was vampires, then it was werewolves, then it was angels or their demon adversaries. Now it's looking like the latest paranormal trend might be mermaids! There's Lies Beneath by Anne Greenwood Brown, the Daughters of the Sea series by Kathryn Lasky, Tempest Released by Tracy Deebs, The Vicious Deep by Zoraida Cordova...and those are just a few of the most recent books. What's going on here? Is this a reaction to the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, thinking about another Olympics full of attractive swimmers, a love of Disney's Ariel or ...? Whatever the reason, this is the perfect trend for summer so dive into a book!

Trailer Tuesday: Fever Crumb by Philip Reeve

Philip Reeve's Fever Crumb is science fiction at it's best. Even better is the fact that it's a prequel series taking place in the same world as the Hungry City Chronicles, so you don't have to wait years to find out what happens next.

Fever Crumb Series:
1. Fever crumb
2. A Web of Air

Hungry City Chronicles:
1. Mortal Engines
2. Predator's Gold
3. Infernal Devices
4. A Darkling Plain
