This week's book is the perfect read for our Summer Reading Program's theme: You Are Here. It is a terrific book written by Casey Scieszka (daughter of Jon Scieszka, the hilarious children's author) and illustrated by Steven Weinberg called To Timbuktu. They met on the road, and created this book together!
Casey and Steven met in Morocco, moved to China then went all the way to Timbuktu. This illustrated travel memoir tells the story of their first two years out of college spent teaching English, making friends across language barriers, researching, painting, and learning to be themselves wherever they are.
Tell us about the coolest thing that has happened to you while traveling, and you could win this book! Winner will be selected Thursday August 4th, as I will be out and about traveling myself!

The coolest experience I have had while traveling (by car) is the weather being eighty degrees and sunny, and then the next minute it was pouring rain with not a single cloud in the sky. Yes, it was very weird. To make it even odder, the downpour only lasted for a maximum of ten seconds, then it simply stopped. This was definitely a cool thing, and I have no idea how it happened.
The coolest thing that has happened to me while traveling would probably be while flying across the ocean. I mean it is always a beautiful thing being able to see the world from above. But this was even cooler, i mean the waves, the rapid change of the current, the vast space and color. And then we flew into a bank of clouds and on the other side- hawaii. It was a perfectly hidden paradise. I mean- whats not cool about that?
The coolest thing that has ever happened to me while on vacation was when I went to Destin. We went to the zoo and they had an exhibit for feeding the giraffes. My parents let me do it. Not only did I get to feed the giraffes but one licked me!!!! That was one of the many cool things that have happened to me while on vacation.
I think the collest is how my parents told us about the last vacation. Basically all they told us was that we were going away for a week. They wouldn't even give us a hint except that we would be doing a ton of driving to get there! That was kind of frustrating at first, but it was worth it because after driving for 22 hours straight we arrived at Disneyland! They had bought 3 day passes for all 6 of us!!!
Do I still have time? I think the coolest experience I had was going to Tofino, BC in Canada. They were like Hawaiian wannabes with palm trees everywhere and all they did was surf. Unlike here, nobody really cared about anything. They were just...relaxed. And the people were so nice there, a bartender even made me hot cocoa.
Our friend Random Number Generator has picked Macey's awesome entry about rain with no clouds. Macey...contact me at teens@sno-isle.org with your full name and home library branch to get your prize!
