Nancy Drew?

Ok, so I know that most of you probably think that you are too old for Nancy Drew these days, but I think it's cool that the teen super sleuth seems to have influenced the new Supreme Court Nominee Sonia Sotomayor to seek justice by becoming lawyer.

Looks like ol' Nancy influenced former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, too!

Has a fictional character ever inspired you?

Secret locker library?!

from the BoingBoing blog:

A teenager asked Yahoo! Questions whether maintaining a lending library in his school locker is illegal (as opposed of merely in contravention of school regulations). A school friend asked to borrow off him The Catcher in the Rye, one of the books in the banned list, and one thing led to another..."This happened a lot and my locker got to overflowing with the banned books, so I decided to put the unoccupied locker next to me to a good use. I now have 62 books in that locker, about half of what was on the list. I took care only to bring the books with literary quality." (He refuses to carry Twilight ;)

How far would you go to defend your right to read what you want? Would you risk getting kicked out of school?

Some of the awesome books he has stashed in the secret locker library:

The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Sabriel
Mort
Interview with the Vampire
The Hunger Games
Shade's Children

Ellen Hopkins writes gritty young adult fiction in free verse, and masterfully tackles her often-times dark subject matter with honesty and empathy. Her new title features identical twins who struggle with their relationship with their father in the absence of a career politician mother. One girl feels she is losing the battle for her father's attention, and the other receives inappropriate kinds of attention from the man.

Help write a book!

Ever read the first line of a book and found it made you either want to keep reading or immediately put it down? Now is your chance help write a book that consists entirely of first lines!

Book: The Sequel will be filled with the first lines of (hypothetical) sequels to any book that's ever been published. So, if you want to be a part of this utter coolness, pick up a book and think of how the sequel would begin...

To enter, go to http://www.bookthesequel.com/home.php#. Entries must be submitted before the end of May to be included in the book.

Here's an example that's posted on the website, "'It turned out not to be the worst of times at all; they got so much worse later.' —From A Tale of Three Cities by Charles Dickens

Have fun!

Author Richelle Mead will be appearing this Saturday (May 9th) at 3pm the University Book Store, across the street from the Mill Creek library:

Richelle Mead's youth-focused urban fantasy series stars a teenage dhamphir (half-human, half-vampire) training to become a guardian of a Moroi, a full-blooded vampire. In Shadow Kiss, Rose—our heroine—is assigned the task of guarding someone, but not her good friend, a Moroi royal named Lissa. This causes her behavior to become erratic, and leads to ghostly visions.ratic, and leads to ghostly visions.

Tamora Pierce on tour

Ok, I have read every. single. Tamora Pierce novel (that's 26 books, people). And a healthy bit of her short stories. So you could say I'm a fan. Perhaps.

Anyway, Tamora Pierce will be in the Puget Sound area for TWO events in the next week. The first will be at Third Place Books (although to get in the "signing line" you seem to have to buy her new book, Bloodhound. Hmm.) on Saturday May 9th at 6:30 pm. The second will be at Secret Garden Books on Monday, May 11th at 7pm.

Oh, and if you do not yet know who Tamora Pierce is, then you are clearly not a patron who has met me at the Lynnwood Library. She writes kick-butt fantasy with strong girls, amazing adventures, and often epic battles between good and evil. There are gods and magic and intrigue and just plain old brute strength. If you are a fan of last year's (amazing) Graceling, Tamora Pierce was the author that paved the way for books like that. Not that I idolize or anything...(start with either Alanna: The First Adventure [which has a horrendous cover] or Terrier).

While I freak out over here, you should go take the "Which Tortall Heroine Are You?" quiz.

I'm Alianne, by the way, according to the quiz. From Trickster's Choice & Trickster's Queen. Which apparently means:

"You are most like Alianne. You are rebellious and cunning. Like her mother, Alanna, you risk your own life to protect those around you, but you would rather they did not know it. Your passion for justice is just as strong as your compassion for others and they often conflict with one another."

Who are you? Alainne? Alanna? Beka? Daine? Keladry?

Casting Call!

I know that a handful of you have found Skeleton Creek, as all copies are currently checked out and there are 6 people in the queue for it. Plus, this just sounds neat.

from HipWriterMama:

I received an e-mail from Patrick Carman, letting me know there is an on-line casting call for his next vBook project

Patrick Carman is the author of The Land of Elyon series, the Atherton Trilogy, Elliot's Park Adventures. His most recent book, Skeleton Creek, combines the book, web videos and live webcasts, for the total reading experience.

Information on the teen roles to be cast, scripts, guidelines, how to submit your audition, and even a chance to view auditions can be found here. Auditions end May 31st.

I do want to stress that it's important to keep safe and aware when posting information about yourself on-line. This sounds like a fun opportunity, but remember, safety first.
