Today is Paranormal Day...Celebrate With a Book

From Kathleen at the Mukilteo Library.

Strange, but true…May 3 is Paranormal Day, a day for lovers of the paranormal to share their enthusiasm with others. The readers at my library love books about the paranormal, especially if they have a little touch of romance. Or a really big touch of romance. And humor doesn’t hurt, either.

So we’re excited that the nominees for this year’s Teens’ Top Ten books include the Hex Hall series by Rachel Hawkins. Hex Hall and Demonglass follow Sophie, a young witch whose first spells have gone horribly wrong, landing her at Hex Hall, the paranormal version of juvie. Vampire roommate, hot gardener, ghostly relatives—these books have it all!

Reserve your copies today and, while you’re waiting, let us know what paranormal books you’d recommend.

Off the top of my head?

The Den of Shadow and Keisha'Ra series by Amelia Atwater Rhodes
Dangerous Girls by R.L. Stine
Vampire Kisses by Ellen Schrieber
Jinx and the Mediator Series by Meg Cabot
Tithe by Holly Black
The Dark Angel by Meredith Anne Pierce
Hero's Song by Edith Pattou
Boys that Bite by Marianne Mancusi...
Again, just off the top of my head...

I'd say to definitly avoid Evermore if you're hunting for paranormal books...
But The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare is absolutely brilliant. (The first book is City of Bones). Not only are they absolutely hilarious- mostly thanks to one sarcastic character who loves to add in his two cents- they're also romantic and full of action. In my opinion, the best combo ever.
Or you could try Clockwork Angel by the same author. It's the first book in The Infernal Devices trilogy, a prequel to TMI. It's leaning more towards the steampunk side of things, but it's still got some definite paranormal notes.
Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr is another great one. And, though I haven't read it yet, Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl is supposed to be great.

These are some great suggestions! Megan, be sure to read Beautiful Creatures--it is very good *and* has a helpful librarian character. I'd also recommend White Cat by Holly Black.
